Both moves are necessary precursors to the Navy basin a nuclear carrierat Mayport. “Thse United States Navy has clearly indicatedx it wants an alternats East Coast location for a nuclear any time, day or night,” said Congressman Anded Crenshaw (Rep., Jacksonville), who added that he expects the full Houswe to approve the funding. The moves had been opposed in subcommitteees by Virginia lawmakerswho don’ want to see the Navy move an East Coast carriert to Mayport.
The Navy has two bases on the West Coasft that canaccommodate carriers, and a thirdc in Japan, and would like an additional base at The Appropriations Committee passed the fundint as part of the 2010 Militaru Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencied Appropriations Bill. The bill also contains fundin g for: • $26.3 million for a training and fitness complexx at Naval StationMayport • $3.7 million for a port operationxs center at the Marine Corps Blountf Island Command • $11.5 million to replacwe fuel tanks at the Jacksonville Defense Logistics Agency Fuel Farm $5.9 million for modifications at Naval Air Statioj Jacksonville.
